Charles grew up in an isolated country town in northern Victoria, Australia, far from anything connected to filmmaking, except for an encyclopaedic obsession with movies.
Though he was raised in low income environment dependent on government assitance, he found a way to occasionally make short films with ‘borrowed’ equipment from the local school, and while still in his teens, won the Best Director award at Tropfest, Australia’s largest short Film Festival.
Over the past decade his acclaimed films have screened and won awards at some of the world’s most prestigious film festivals including Clermont-Ferrand, SXSW, Telluride, Toronto, MIFF, Flickerfest and Sapporo. And in 2016 he was nominated at the AACTA Awards for Best Short Fiction Film.
His latest short film short film ‘All These Creatures’ is currently touring festivals and he is currently developing his first feature ‘Seed’, TV series ‘The Anti-Socials’ and other long form narrative projects.
